Host Ports 2011
Sail Training International selects the host ports for the Tall Ships Races and the process takes a number of years.
Tall Ships have visited hundreds of ports in the 53 year history of the event. Sometimes they visit national capitals and on other occasions they go to relatively small ports
The task for the selection committee is to decide where they want the event to go. There are lots of options including Baltic or Mediterranean ports, the Iberian peninsula or ports on the edge of the North Sea. Once the general area for the event has been agreed, ports within that area are approached and asked if they wish to bid to host the event.
When the bids are submitted, the strongest contenders are reviewed again to make sure the ports are sufficiently far apart to make the races and cruise in company interesting.
Ports are advised that they have been selected more than 4 years prior to the event. Sometimes there are four host ports and in other years there are five.
In 2011 there will be five ports. While the first four - Waterford, Greenock, Lerwick and Stavanger - have hosted the Tall Ships in previous years, the final port, Halmstad, will be hosting the event for the first time.
The dates for each port are as follows:
- Waterford, Ireland :: 30 June - 3 July
- Greenock, Scotland :: 9 - 12 July
- Lerwick, Shetland :: 21 - 24 July
- Stavanger, Norway :: 28 - 31 July
- Halmstad, Sweden :: 5 - 8 August
Logo
The official logo of The Tall Ships Race has been developed as a brand mark for the race series.
Sail Training International recognises the importance of host ports having the opportunity to identify effectively with the branding of The Tall Ships Races. This is facilitated in the design of the logo in which there is an opportunity for the local port to insert a 'secondary' and 'localised' design in the lower half of the main event logo.
Some ports choose to use this space for a stylised graphic. For the host port of Greenock, an image of the Victoria Tower has been selected because it has been a landmark for shipping on the Clyde since the late 19th century.
This branding will be used in connection with local promotion of the event and on related merchandise.
