ASTO SMALL SHIPS RACES
8th-11th August 2009
Since 2002 the Association of Sail Training Associations has organised the Small Ships Races which is a youth event open to monohull sailing vessels up to 120ft in length. The inaugural race from Weymouth to St.Malo was deemed to be a tremendous success by all involved and since then host ports have included Ipswich, Delfzijl, Glasgow, Belfast and Cowes. In 2009 Riverside Inverclyde, one of the partners in Sail Inverclyde Limited is sponsoring the Small Ships Race between Greenock and Belfast.
Participating vessels have to be a minimum of 7.3m (24 ft) at the waterline and half of those on board during the races must be between 14 and 25 years old.
It is hoped the event will attract up to 20 entries from organisations such as the Ocean Youth Trust, Sea Scouts, Fairbridge and the Swan Trust. The timing of the race has been planned to ensure that the small Ships fleet arrives in Belfast in time for the arrival of the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge from Halifax, Nova Scotia.
